First, try to get an idea of what she likes based on how she reacts in jewelry stores. If she expects you to propose, chances are she has dropped some hints. If not, try and get her into a jewelry store for some other reason, and pay attention to what draws her attention.
You will also have to think of what type of woman your girlfriend is, which will help you know what kind of ring she wants. For the purpose of deciding on an engagement ring, women can be broken down into two very basic categories. There is the type of woman that is really into style, likes to show off her clothes and accessories, buys designer shoes and purses and believes that appearances are important. This type of woman will usually prefer a flashy engagement ring. Think of a gold or platinum band, with at least a large center stone, surrounded by smaller stones, possible diamonds, more cubic zirconias, or other precious stones. Once you have decided between these two basic categories, you are ready to go to a jewelry store. Make sure to check out a few different stores, and find a clerk that you feel comfortable with.
